چکیده

Members of the bill¢sh family are highly visual predatory teleosts inhabiting the open ocean. Little is known about their visual abilities in detail, but past studies have indicated that these ¢shes were likely to be monochromats. This study, however, presents evidence of two anatomically distinct cone types in bill¢sh. The cells are arranged in a regular mosaic pattern of single and twin cones as in many ¢shes, and this arrangement suggests that the di¡erent cone types also show di¡erent spectral sensitivity, which is the basis for colour vision. First measurements using microspectrophotometry (MSP) revealed a peak absorption of the rod pigment at 484 nm, indicating that MSP, despite technical di¤culties, will be a decisive tool in proving colour vision in these o¡shore ¢shes. When hunting, bill¢sh such as the sail¢sh £ash bright blue bars on their sides. This colour re£ects largely in ultraviolet (UV) light at 350 nm as revealed by spectrophotometric measurements. Bill¢sh lenses block light of wavelengths below 400 nm, presumably rendering the animal blind to the UV component of its own body colour. Interestingly, at least two prey species of bill¢sh have lenses transmitting light in the UV waveband and are therefore likely to perceive a large fraction of the UV peak found in the blue bar of the sail¢sh. The possible biological signi¢cance of this ¢nding is discussed.

Bill colour and correlates of male quality in blackbirds: an analysis using canonical ordination.

Carotenoid-dependent plumage displays are widely assumed to be honest indicators of individual health or quality, which are used as cues during mate choice and/or agonistic signalling. Despite the fact that red, yellow and orange pigmentation of bills is common, and also variable between individuals, comparatively little is known about bill colouration as a condition-dependent trait. Furthermor...

Seasonal Changes in Colour: A Comparison of Structural, Melanin- and Carotenoid-Based Plumage Colours

BACKGROUND Plumage coloration is important for bird communication, most notably in sexual signalling. Colour is often considered a good quality indicator, and the expression of exaggerated colours may depend on individual condition during moult. After moult, plumage coloration has been deemed fixed due to the fact that feathers are dead structures. Still, many plumage colours change after moult...

The study of synthetic and natural pigments on the colour of the Albino Oscar

In this study, we have investigated the effects of mix of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) & Carrot) Daucus carota ( and red Bell pepper )Capsicum annuum( as a natural pigment source and astaxanthin as synthetic pigment sources on the skin colour of cichlid fish (Astronotus ocellatus sp., Agassiz, 1831), which are generally white with red patches in the dorsal skin. The fish were fed diets contain...

Towards a cognitive definition of colour vision

In recent years, colour vision abilities have been rather generously awarded to various invertebrates and even bacteria. This uncertainty of when to diagnose colour vision stems in part from confusing what colour vision can do with what it is. What colour vision can do is discriminate wavelength independent of intensity. However, if we take this as a definition of what colour vision is, then we...
